6 Deadly Sins To Avoid

As a Muslims we are obliged to follow the commands of Allah and his messenger (pbuh). Many of the teachings tell us to avoid committing sins as much as we can.

No human being is perfect and will always fall into sin. No matter how strong their faith may be, even the best of us will get affected by the shaytaan as he tries extra hard with the ones that are on the straight.

Here are 6 major sins in Islam that we should all try to avoid. The teachings tell us that there will be no forgiveness for these types of sins. However, Allah is the most merciful and if we repent to him from the bottom of our hearts (make tawbah), he will surely forgive us.

6) Consuming Riba
5) Not paying Zakat
4) Not praying salah
3) Killing and murder of the innocent
2) Black Magic
1) Shirk (associating partners with Allah)

6 –  Consuming Riba

This refers to dealing with Interest or usury which Allah has prohibited. Very common practice to fall into this sin in this day and age as interest is promoted and marketed heavily by consumer brands and banks.

Allah the most high, talks about this in the Quran :

“Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba” [2:275]

“O you who believe! Fear Allah and give up what remains (due to you) from Ribaa (from now onward) if you are (really) believers. And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger” [2:278].

5 – Not Paying Zakat

Zakat is the giving of charity to the poor and needy, is the 3rd pillar of Islam. Being charitable and providing for the needy are not only important features of a Muslim character, but it is an obligation for every adult Muslims with the means.

The individual paying zakah must own a specific amount of wealth or savings (after living costs and expenses). This is referred to as nisaab and is the threshold at which Zakat becomes payable.

The amount of Zakat to be paid yearly is 2.5% of Nisaab (or ones wealth). The reward for those who pay Zakat is great. But the punishment for those who neglect this pillar whilst knowing that it is an obligation is very severe.

Allah Says in the Quran, those who hoard up gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah, unto them give tidings of painful doom.

On the day when that (money, gold and silver), the Zakaah of which has not been paid) will be heated in the fire of hell and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs. It will be said to them, ‘This is the treasure which you hoarded for yourselves. Now taste what you used to hoard’ [9:34-35]

4 – Not Praying

Salah (Prayer) is the most obligatory act off the fiver pillars of Islam.

Salah (prayer) is the most obligatory act of the Five Pillars of Islam next to the two testifications of faith. It is the best and most perfect way to worship God, the scholars of Islam are unanimously agreed that prayer is an obligation and that this is sustained with numerous texts from the Quran and Sunnah.

The prayers is a blessing for the believer which comes from many benefits and rewards, but those who intentionally deny this blessing without good reason will be held to account by their Lord.

Allah says in the Quran: ‘but there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursed their desires, so they’re going to meet evil,  except those who repent believe and do righteousness, for those will enter paradise and will not be wronged at all. [19:59-60]

3 –  Killing the innocent

Killing or murdering an innocent soul is a major sin that can cause the person to enter hell. The prophet peace be upon him said a man will continue to be sound in his religion, so long as he does not shed blood which it is Forbidden to shed.

Allah says in Quran: ‘and whoever kills a believer intentionally his recompense is Hell to abide therein and the wrath and the Curse of Allah are upon him and a great punishment prepared for him’. [4:93]

2 –  Black Magic

Witchcraft involves elements of shirk because it requires worshipping the Jinn and seeking the help of the Jinn to misguide people and cause misery.

Allah said clearly in the Quran that one who does black magic work have no share in the hereafter.

Black Magic is one of the worst sins a person can commit and is on the same level as Kufr (leaving Islam). Because Allah says many times in the Quran that Magic is Kufr

1 –  Shirk (associating partners with Allah)

The greatest of all Sins is ‘ Shirk’. Which is associating partners with Allah. This leads a person to eternal doom if the person dies in this state.

Allah has said in the Quran: “Verily, who so oever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden paradise for him, and the fire will be his final abode.” [5:72]

In another Verse Allah Says: “And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.” [39:65]

Although we have mentioned some of the most severe and deadly sins a person can commit, remember that Allah’s mercy is much greater than his wrath and he is able to forgive all sins, if you repent sincerely and change your ways
