Hadith - A Unique Way To Give

Hadith on Helping others with your surplus wealth rather than wasting it…

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “O son of Adam, it is better for you if you spend your surplus (wealth), but if you withhold it, it is evil for you.” [ Muslim ]

Once Abdul-Qadir Jeelani was on his way to perform Hajj. He passed through a small town called Halla where he decided to rest for the night. When people heard of his presence they came to visit him and request him to stay with them. Instead of accepting their invitation he inquired about the most poor and needy person in the village. They told him of a poverty-stricken old man. Abdul-Qadir Jeelani went straight to his house. The old man lived in a mud house whose walls had fallen from several places and whose occupants had hung old blankets all around to protect their privacy. The old man lived there with his wife and a daughter. Abdul-Qadir Jeelani requested the old man to allow him to spend a night at his place. The old man said that it if these ruins of his were where he would prefer to stay then that would be an honour for him. So Abdul-Qadir Jeelani stayed the night in the old man’s house. The word of Abdul-Qadir Jeelani’s stay in the old man’s house quickly spread all over town and hordes of people came to visit him with presents of all sorts including gold, silver, cows, sheep, goats and grain. Abdul-Qadir Jeelani gave all of these gifts to the old man and when the night was over set out for Makkah Mukarramah. After Abdul-Qadir Jeelani’s visit the old man began to live comfortably with his family. Abdul-Qadir Jeelani had only stayed with the old man to help him out and to remove from him the hardships of poverty. The pious servants of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) waste no opportunity to help others.
