Hadith of the Day: The Not So Rich Millionaire

Today’s Hadith is about: Richness of the Soul

Hadith - The Not So Rich Millionaire

Hadith about How one perceives that having a lot of wealth makes you ‘rich’. But where does true richness comes from?

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wasallam) said:

“Richness does not lie in the abundance of (worldly) goods, but richness is the richness of the soul (heart, self).” [Muslim]

What do we learn from this Hadith?

There are millionaires who are fixated on getting more money, constantly stressed that their riches won’t be sufficient for them. They forget that every person is tested by Allah in their own way, whether they have been given a lot of wealth or are in poverty. They will have to answer one day for every penny they have spent.

A ‘millionaires” frailty does not give them a chance to appreciate what they have been honored with by Allah swt. It is Allah that has given them their wealth in the first instance and they forget that easily. Yes they may work ‘hard’ for it, in the dunya to attain the wealth but essentially their rizq is already decided by Allah and without his permission, one will not be able to attain their wealth.

Such an individual in spite of having wealth can’t be known as a rich individual. For what use is great wealth which doesn’t not allow its owner to feel rich, secure or content?

Genuine wealth is the abundance of happiness and contentment. This is a blessing from Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and it lives as happiness in the core of an individual. They spend a reasonable amount of their wealth for the sake of Allah and also feel good about it.
