Verses in the Quran About Manners

The Quran was revealed by Allah as a guidance to mankind. There are many verses in the Quran in regards to good Manners and the way we should treat others.

Below are a selection of instructions sent to us by Allah:

  1. By no means lie

“Such are the regulations of hajj. To respect the prohibitions of God is a virtuous deed in the sight of one’s Lord. Consuming the flesh of certain animals is made lawful for you. Stay away from wickedness, idols, and false words.” (22:30)

2. By no means spy on anybody

“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.” (49:12)

3. Do not gloat

Qarun was one of Moses’ people, but he oppressed them. We had given him such treasures that even their keys would have weighed down a whole company of strong men. His people said to him, Do not gloat, for God does not like people who gloat. (28:76)

4. Don’t insult anybody

Believers, no one group of men should jeer at another, who may after all be better than them; no one group of women should jeer at another, who may after all be better than them; do not speak ill of one another; do not use offensive nicknames for one another. How bad it is to be called a mischief-maker after accepting faith! Those who do not repent of this behaviour are evildoers. (49:11)

5. Don’t waste

Give relatives their due, and the needy, and travellers- do not squander your wealth wastefully: (17:26)

6. Feed the needy

We have made camels part of God’s sacred rites for you. There is much good in them for you, so invoke God’s name over them as they are lined up for sacrifice, then, when they have fallen down dead, feed yourselves and those who do not ask, as well as those who do. We have subjected them to you in this way so that you may be thankful. (22:36)

7. Don’t backbite

Believers, avoid making too many assumptions- some assumptions are sinful- and do not spy on one another or speak ill of people behind their backs: would any of you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother? No, you would hate it. So be mindful of God: God is ever relenting, most merciful. (49:12)

8. Maintain your oaths

God does not take you [to task] for what is thoughtless in your oaths, only for your binding oaths: the atonement for breaking an oath is to feed ten poor people with food equivalent to what you would normally give your own families, or to clothe them, or to set free a slave- if a person cannot find the means, he should fast for three days. This is the atonement for breaking your oaths- keep your oaths. In this way God makes clear His revelations to you, so that you may be thankful. (5:89)

Al-Ma’idah, Ayah 89

9. By no means take bribes

When her envoy came to Solomon, Solomon said, ‘What! Are you offering me wealth? What God has given me is better than what He has given you, though you rejoice in this gift of yours. (27:36)

An-Naml, Ayah 36

10. Fulfill your contracts

As for those who have honoured the treaty you made with them and who have not supported anyone against you: fulfil your agreement with them to the end of their term. God loves those who are mindful of Him. (9:4)

At-Tawbah, Ayah 4

11. Contain your anger

who give, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and pardon people- God loves those who do good. (3:134)

Al Imran, Ayah 134

12. Don’t gossip

When you took it up with your tongues, and spoke with your mouths things you did not know [to be true], you thought it was trivial but to God it was very serious. (24:15)

An-Nur, Ayah 15

13. Be Positive about others

When you heard the lie, why did believing men and women not think well of their own people and declare, ‘This is obviously a lie’? (24:12)

An-Nur, Ayah 12

14. Treat Guests well – (Quran 51.24-27)

[Muhammad], have you heard the story of the honoured guests of Abraham?

Adh-Dhariyat, Ayah 24

They went in to see him and said, ‘Peace.’ ‘Peace,’ he said, [adding to himself] ‘These people are strangers.’

51:26
Adh-Dhariyat, Ayah 26

and placed it before them. ‘Will you not eat?’ he said,

51:27
Adh-Dhariyat, Ayah 27

15. Don’t harm believers

and those who undeservedly insult believing men and women will bear the guilt of slander and flagrant sin. (33:58)

Al-Ahzab, Ayah 58

16. Respect your parents

Your Lord has commanded that you should worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say no word that shows impatience with them, and do not be harsh with them, but speak to them respectfully. (17:23)
